A plague is spreading across the land. Crops are rotting. People are dying in the streets. Sora, with the help of her magical Cat's Eye necklace, is the only one who can stop it.

She must travel overseas to the Lost Isles, a place of legend and mystery. Only there can she destroy the bloodmage, Volcrian, putting an end to the curse. She is accompanied by Crash, a lethal assassin who once threatened—and saved—her life. But Sora is beginning to question her dark companion. He seems to be carrying a secret; a hidden past that could endanger them all.

Meanwhile, they are hunted by an underground society known as the Shade. For centuries, the Shade has waited for the perfect opportunity to step into the light. Now they are perilously close to resurrecting a Dark God and unleashing a wave of unimaginable destruction. They only need to collect the three sacred weapons, and Sora has already found two....

Here we have the playlist the author has so graciously made up for us!!

Background Music: Winterspell by Two Steps from Hell & Zooster’s Escape (Madagascar Soundtrack) by Hans Zimmer
These songs pretty much describe the world in the books. I listened to them a lot while writing descriptions and general action-awesomeness. They lend a sense of urgency, and in Winterspell, the mind can’t help but travel to faraway lands.

Give Your Heart a Break by Demi Lavato

The day I first met you
You told me you'd never fall in love
But now that I get you
I know fear is what it really was

Now here we are, so close
Yet so far, haven't I passed the test?

This song pretty much sums up Sora’s head. I listened to it a lot while driving back and forth from Los Angeles to San Fransisco (about 6-7 hours.) What I love about the song is the desperation, the voice, and of course, the lyrics. “I know fear is what it really was….”

Demons by Imagine Dragons

I wanna hide the truth
I wanna shelter you
But with the beast inside
There’s nowhere we can hide….

Your eyes, they shine so bright
I want to save that light
I can't escape this now
Unless you show me how….

This song depicts Crash’s suffering: the demon he hides, his inner sorrow and conflict, his need to shelter Sora from his true self…. I listened to this song on repeat while writing his self-contained monologues. Imagine Dragons reaches into the depths of human suffering, and from it, touches upon a facet of the human condition: the evil we’ve done, and how some of us truly don’t believe we deserve forgiveness.

Bat Country by Avenged Sevenfold

Sometimes I don't know why we'd rather live than die,
We look up towards the sky for answers to our lives.
We may get some solutions but most just pass us by,
Don't want your absolution cause I can't make it right.
I'll make a beast out of myself, gets rid of all the pain of being a man.

Simply a classic. This song reminds me of the fight between Viper and Volcrian, when Crash finally embraces his darker self. In order to defend Sora, “I'll make a beast out of myself, gets rid of all the pain of being a man.” This song is a nod to Crash’s true strength, his hidden rage, and the true spirit of self-destruction.

Little Talks by Of Monsters and Men

Lori: There's an old voice in my head
that's holding me back
Ferran: Well tell her that I miss our little talks…..
Lori: Soon it will all be over, buried with our past
Ferran: We used to play outside when we were young
and full of life and full of love.

Lori: Some days I feel like I'm wrong when I am right.
Ferran: Your mind is playing tricks on you my dear.

'Cause though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore.

This duet works well for both Sora/Crash and Lori/Ferran. To me, it sounds like a conversation between Lori and Ferran, mentioning their history and the uncertainty of their relationship in the books. There is familiarity between them… but is it worth pursuing?

Shape of My Heart by Backstreet Boys

Baby, please try to forgive me
Stay here don't put out the glow
Hold me now don't bother if every minute it makes me weaker
You can save me from the man that I've become, oh yeah

Lookin' back on the things I've done
I was tryin' to be someone
I played my part, kept you in the dark
Now let me show you the shape of my heart….

I anticipate some groans on this one… but really, it is so perfect for when Crash and Sora are finally face-to-face, with nothing left but “to show you the shape of my heart.”

Drive By by Train

There's nothing up my sleeve but love for you
And a little time to get my head together too
On the other side of a street I knew
Stood a girl that looked like you
I guess thats deja vu
But I thought this can't be true….

This is definitely a Ferran theme song. When I heard it, I immediately thought of his feelings for Lori, seeing her after all these years, and how it sparks in him the will to become a better man, “to get my head together too.”
